Building Tomorrow’s Space Workforce: COSMIC’s ISAM Education Course Initiative

By Alaan Franklin, Managing Director at Tactical Nexus Technologies and COSMIC Product Team Leader

The future of space operations depends on a skilled workforce capable of mastering In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) technologies. As space activities become increasingly complex—from satellite servicing to orbital construction—the need for specialized education and training has never been more critical.

COSMIC is spearheading this transformation through developing a comprehensive ISAM Education Course.

We’re currently seeking Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from across the nation to review the curriculum, lead individual courses, and shape the next generation of space professionals.

The ISAM Education Course

The ISAM Education Course represents the next generation of ISAM educational initiatives, building upon the recent success of the COSMIC Capstone Challenge (C3), designed to address the growing skills gap in space-based operations.

Building on our extensive taxonomies for ISAM capabilities, technologies, and demonstration infrastructure, these ISAM courses will provide practical, at times hands-on, training in the critical competencies demanded to mature a safe, scalable, and sustainable space ecosystem.

Our educational framework encompasses key ISAM domains including:

  • Rendezvous, Proximity Operations, and Docking (RPOD)
  • On-orbit and surface assembly operations
  • Robotic servicing and maintenance
  • Recycling, reuse, and repurposing technologies
  • Interface technologies and human-system integration
  • Space Law and Policy

Calling All Subject Matter Experts

We need your expertise. COSMIC is actively seeking experienced professionals who can contribute to developing world-class educational content. Whether your background is in:

  • Space systems engineering
  • Robotics and automation
  • Mission operations
  • Space manufacturing
  • Human factors engineering
  • Software development for space applications
  • Space law and policy

Your knowledge can help bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world space operations. We’re particularly interested in SMEs who can provide insights into practical challenges, lessons learned, and emerging best practices in ISAM operations.
